Connecting Digital Infrastructure With Physical Infrastructure

For decades, physical infrastructure and digital infrastructure were planned and delivered by entirely separate industries operating on separate timelines. A building was designed and constructed; network and technology infrastructure was retrofitted afterward, often as an afterthought. That sequencing is increasingly a liability rather than a workable process.

The Cost of Retrofitting Digital Infrastructure

Retrofitting network cabling, wireless access points, data infrastructure and smart-building systems into a facility after construction is complete is consistently more expensive and disruptive than planning them in from the design stage. Wall cavities are closed, conduit paths are inaccessible, and structural accommodations that would have been trivial during construction become major works after the fact.

Convergent Planning Changes the Sequence

The alternative is convergent planning: engaging telecommunications and technology infrastructure requirements at the same stage as civil and structural design, not after it. This means conduit routing, power provisioning for network equipment, and connectivity requirements are built into architectural and engineering plans from the outset, rather than negotiated around a finished structure.

Where This Matters Most

Government facilities, data centres, healthcare buildings, educational institutions and any large enterprise facility with significant technology requirements all benefit disproportionately from convergent digital-physical infrastructure planning, because the technology density and reliability requirements in these building types are high enough that retrofit costs and disruption are severe if digital requirements are discovered late.

The Practical Implication for Project Teams

Organizations planning a facility, construction or infrastructure programme with any meaningful technology or connectivity requirement benefit from bringing telecommunications and technology planning into the project team from the earliest design stages — not engaging it as a separate, later-stage workstream. The earlier digital infrastructure needs are identified, the less expensive and disruptive they are to accommodate.
